The Next Big Thing Blog Hop!

Hello all! So, I realize I've been on hiatus for a while (erm, eight months, yikes), but I'm finally back on the the glorious Internet and have honestly missed blogging! The constantly fabulous Sarah Wylie  tagged me in The Next Big Thing Blog Hop, which gives me the perfect thing to write about for my first post.

Here are the questions and my answers!

What is the working title of your next book?

So, right now the book I'm working on is the sequel to The Quiet Calling, and as such has been appropriately been named The Sequel.  Only, when I talk about it, I usually write it in all caps (THE SEQUEL) to show how daunting it is in real life to write.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

Well, as a sequel, most of the ideas are continuations from its prequel.  I started writing it in January/February 2010, immediately after I finished writing the first book, and then shelved it until recently because I realized that I couldn't write it when the first book was still such a mess.  Since it's beginnings, a lot of ideas have changed, and my writing inspiration has come from everything, from old Westerns to Anna Karenina.  It's a weird mix of things.

What genre does your book fall under?

Historical Fiction YA.

What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?

Oh goodness, such a hard question! For me, August Phoenix, the love interest, is undoubtedly Ben Barnes, but he'd probably be too old to play August now.  Jane Hawkes, the MC, is pretty like Alexis Bledel and Zooey Deschanel, but harder looking, and I haven't found that actress yet.  Who am I kidding?  Cast Jennifer Lawrence, I love her in everything.

What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?

Since it's still being written, the best synopsis I have is actually a quote from Jeremy Taylor- "Love is friendship set on fire."  Also, it's hard to write a synopsis without giving away the ending of the first book!

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Hopefully an agency, someday!  I guess we have to work on getting the first book published
first!

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?

I'm still working on it!  Like I said, the very beginning was written in 2010, and I'm at about 25,000 words right now, not even halfway (I can already tell there will be a third book).

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

It's not historical fiction, but I think fans of the Graceling series can find similar elements in my books.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

The first book was inspired by a dream about a saloon girl named J.H. and the doctor she fell in love with while trying to pull a con on him.  That's not so much what the book is about now, though!  The sequel was inspired when I got to the end of The Quiet Calling and realized that the story wasn't over yet.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

I'm determined that this book will be completely character driven.  I'm focusing more on characters in this book that were supporting characters in the first book and creating new problems to keep the relationship-centric bits from getting too stale.  There are also going to be new characters I'm already completely in love with, and I don't want to give too much away about them right now, but I hope readers will love them, too.

Since it's been so long since I've blogged, I'm not really sure who's still in the blogosphere!  If you're interested in writing about your current writing project, please consider yourself tagged!  I'd love to hear about what everyone is working on, and this is a great format to do it in.

I'll be back soon to talk about what I've been up to in the last eight months and hopefully to wander around the blogosphere and read up on everyone's projects! Happy blog hopping!

Yay! You've posted!

I LOVE Ben Barnes for August. Love! And I had no idea TQC was inspired by a dream, but it seems dream books are the writerly equivalent of a good luck charm so I am on board with this!

Can't wait for more posts!

Oooo, I'm intrigued by a saloon girl pulling a con on the town doctor, but now I'm even more intrigued by how you moved on from that. Look forward to hearing more someday.
And, yes, can't we have Jennifer Lawrence cast in everything? She's amazing on-screen and off.

Welcome back. :-)

I like the sound of your book and the love the idea of Ben Barnes as almost anyone.

See you around, hopefully.
